Why is hydration important?

Water helps the body to:

๐Ÿ’ง Regulate body temperature
๐Ÿฉธ Maintain healthy blood circulation
๐Ÿง  Support normal brain function
๐Ÿฆด Lubricate joints
๐Ÿšฝ Support bowel function
โšก Maintain energy and overall body function

As we age, staying properly hydrated becomes especially important.

Why can dehydration be a concern for older adults?

Older adults may sometimes:

โ€ข Feel less thirsty than they used to
โ€ข Forget to drink regularly
โ€ข Have difficulty accessing or carrying drinks
โ€ข Avoid drinking because of concerns about frequent urination
โ€ข Lose fluids through illness, sweating, vomiting or diarrhoea

That is why we should not wait until we feel very thirsty before drinking.

Know the warning signs โš ๏ธ

Possible signs of dehydration include:

๐Ÿ’ง Dry mouth or lips
๐Ÿšฝ Dark or reduced urine
๐Ÿ˜ด Unusual tiredness
๐Ÿค• Headache or dizziness
๐Ÿง  Confusion or unusual changes in alertness
โค๏ธ Feeling weak or unwell

Severe or sudden symptoms require prompt medical attention.

Simple ways to stay hydrated

Make hydration part of your daily routine:

๐Ÿฅค Keep water within easy reach.
โฐ Drink fluids regularly throughout the day.
๐Ÿ‰ Enjoy water-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables.
โ˜• Include suitable fluids with meals and snacks.
๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿพโ€๐Ÿฆณ Encourage older Sisters who may forget to drink.

Small, regular amounts can help make hydration easier.

One important reminder

๐Ÿ’œ There is no single amount of fluid that is right for everyone.

Some people may need to limit their fluid intake because of certain medical conditions or treatment.

If an older Sister has been given specific instructions about fluids, follow the advice of her healthcare professional.

When unsure, ask a qualified healthcare professional.

CSECNG Reminder

๐Ÿ’ง HYDRATION IS PART OF HEALTHY AGEING.

Don’t wait until someone becomes seriously thirsty or unwell before thinking about fluids.

Let’s make hydration a simple part of everyday care.
