Understanding Your Body: Basic Nutrition and Common Health Conditions
Nourishing the Body for a Healthier Tomorrow
Good health is one of life’s greatest blessings, and it begins with understanding how our bodies function and the role nutrition plays in keeping us strong and healthy. Every day, the food we eat provides the nutrients our bodies need to produce energy, repair tissues, strengthen the immune system, and support every organ. Making informed nutritional choices is one of the most effective ways to prevent disease and promote healthy aging.
What is Nutrition?
Nutrition is the science of how the body takes in food, digests it, absorbs nutrients, converts them into energy, and eliminates waste. Every stage of this process is essential for sustaining life, supporting growth, maintaining good health, and preventing disease. When our bodies receive the right nutrients in the right amounts, they are better equipped to function efficiently and resist illness.
The Six Essential Nutrients
The human body requires six essential nutrients to function properly:
- Carbohydrates provide the body’s primary source of energy.
- Proteins help build and repair muscles and body tissues.
- Fats supply energy, support hormone production, and aid the absorption of certain vitamins.
- Vitamins regulate body processes and strengthen the immune system.
- Minerals are necessary for healthy bones, nerve function, and fluid balance.
- Water supports every cell in the body by transporting nutrients, regulating body temperature, lubricating joints, and removing waste products.
A balanced diet that includes foods from all these nutrient groups is key to maintaining good health throughout life.
Understanding Your Weight
Maintaining a healthy body weight is an important part of overall wellness. During the webinar, participants were introduced to Body Mass Index (BMI), a simple tool used by healthcare professionals to estimate whether a person’s weight falls within a healthy range based on their height.
While BMI is useful for identifying potential health risks, it is only a screening tool and should always be interpreted alongside a professional medical assessment.
The Importance of Staying Hydrated
Water is often overlooked, yet it is one of the body’s most important nutrients. Since approximately 60% of the human body is made up of water, staying hydrated is essential for maintaining normal body functions.
Common signs of dehydration include:
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Dry mouth
- Dizziness
- Dark-coloured urine
A simple habit such as drinking water regularly throughout the day—rather than waiting until you feel thirsty—can significantly improve your overall health.
Common Health Conditions and How to Prevent Them
Cardiovascular Disease
Heart disease remains one of the leading health concerns worldwide. Several factors increase the risk, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, smoking, diabetes, physical inactivity, and family history.
The good news is that many of these risks can be reduced through healthy lifestyle choices. Regular exercise, eating more vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and fibre-rich foods, maintaining a healthy body weight, managing stress, and attending regular blood pressure checks all contribute to better heart health.
Diabetes
Diabetes affects the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar.
The webinar distinguished between Type 1 Diabetes, an autoimmune condition requiring insulin therapy, and Type 2 Diabetes, which is closely linked to lifestyle and is the most common form of diabetes.
Warning signs include:
- Frequent urination
- Excessive thirst
- Persistent fatigue
- Blurred vision
- Slow wound healing
Healthy eating, regular physical activity, and routine health monitoring can help prevent or manage Type 2 diabetes effectively.
Building Healthy Habits Every Day
Healthy living is not about making drastic changes overnight. Instead, it is built through consistent daily habits. The webinar encouraged participants to:
- Eat a variety of colourful foods to ensure a wide range of nutrients.
- Balance meals by filling half the plate with vegetables, one-quarter with lean protein, and one-quarter with whole grains or other complex carbohydrates.
- Engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days.
- Get seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night.
- Limit highly processed foods that are high in salt, sugar, and unhealthy additives.
- Choose fruits and other healthy snacks instead of sugary or processed alternatives.
- Schedule regular health screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol, particularly from the age of 40 onwards.
